Cynthia’s Diary – March 27 – 28, 1942

Friday 27th March

Went to garage with battery.  Saw soldiers.  When I went office saw staff sergeants, also Bill.  Stopped and spoke.  I have to register tomorrow.  Did not go out anywhere.  Rather fed up.

 

Saturday 28th March

My Saturday off.  Went to dance.  Met lots.  Fred MacMurray (Bill) brought me home.  Several offers to take me out.  Nic gave me photo.  Roy gave me a film.  One guy likes me a lot, but I don’t like him.  Saw Milton.  Very good band.  Charles was not at dance.  Nic was annoyed because I would not dance rumba with him and would not let him take me home!!

Cynthia’s Diary March 25 – 26, 1942

Wednesday 25th March

Bob insists on playing my record “Lovely Weekend”.

Had phone call from Bob said he was coming at about 7.  Charles Lavell was waiting outside.  Gave him my address.  He’s crazy about me.  He was born in France, but comes from Canada.  Charles Bartlett bought me refreshments. Roy at dance; also lot more.  Bob came.  He’s a darling.  May go to London Easter with him.  He came all the way on a motor bike.

 

Thursday 26th March

 

Went to pictures.  Saw “Tight Shoes”, also Basil Rathbone in “Black Cat”.  Very good.  Mummy, Pam and Wendy went also.  Alex, a dispatch rider, walked along with me.  Wants me to go out with him.  He’s Canadian.  Not very tall.  But rather cute.  Dorothy also went to the pictures.

 

Cynthia’s Diary – March 23 – 24, 1942

Monday 23rd March

Did not go to pictures after all.  But stayed home, Pamela, Wendy and Mummy went, then said it was very good.  The weather is lovely now.

 

 

Tuesday 24th March

Charles Lavell a Canadian wanted to take my photo.  Got one of boys to take it.  One of the other boys and him were on it with me.  Stood talking to them while they made gun reinforcement.  Had ride on running board of truck.  Met Kub also Charles Bartlett and John L.  Went and had drink.  Kept glasses from Onslow.

Charles came to house.  He’s still crazy about me.  I still like him a little bit.  Went lovely moonlight walk.

Cynthia’s Diary – March 21 – 22, 1942

Saturday 21st March

Had drink at 3 Horseshoes with Doug and Haverdal??  Went to the Carnival Dance.  Met Doug staff sergeant and brother Howard.  Arranged to meet Roy tomorrow.  Saw Bill, Tony.  Danced a lot with Charles.  Went to three Horseshoes.  Cpl nearly had fight.  Had to throw shoes across to soldiers.  Danced with Nic.  He seemed little disappointed when I danced with others.  One of the Medical corps walked home with me.  Named George.

 

Sunday 22nd March

Went to movies.  Saw  “Ghost Train”,  also Roland Young and Hugh Herbert in “His Affair”.  Went with Roy.  He gave me 25 British Consul cigarettes.  Went in 1/10d seats.  Saw lots of people I knew.  Saw Joy.  Roy offered to buy me drink, but I refused.  May see him at dance on Saturday.

Cynthia’s Diary – March 17 – 18, 19 – 20, 1942

Tuesday 17th March

Went to village hall fair.  Lost all my money.  Went in ankle competition nearly won, Lots said I should have done.  Saw lots I knew, Bill, Charles, Caddy etc!  Had quite a good time.  Saw officers.  Jean.  Her father played accordion.  Pamela went around with Charles.  He walked to door with me.  I can’t understand him.

Wednesday 18th March

Went to dance I think.  Cannot remember exactly as I forgot to fill my diary.

Thursday 19th March

Went to pictures.  Saw “Man Hunt”.  Went in 1/10d seats.

Friday 20th March

Did not go anywhere much!  Went and had a look at dance in Village Hall saw lots of officers I know!  Saw Ken.  Lots of nice dresses etc.  Stayed watching quite a long time.  Officers nearly invited me in.  Wished I could have gone.

Sunday 15th March

It seemed strange to hear air raid sirens.  Had headache.  Went to movies.  Saw Jean Arthur.  Got home about 7.  Bob did not come after all.  Had breakfast served in bedroom of hotel.  Rather salty bacon.  Nearly forgot case.  Saw American convoy.  Went to Cranleigh Hotel.  Saw officers, etc.  Played cards, lost!!  Yesterday evening it poured with rain.  Siren went last night!

 

Monday 16th March

Warning went this morning.  Went to movies saw Joan Bennett , George Sanders and Walter Pigeon in “Man Hunt”.  Also,  “Accent on Love”.  Went with Bill and Geo, two Canadians.  Went in 2/6d seats.  Molly Hartley and Film star officer sat in front of me.  Saw officers from medical corps.  Went to bed quite early.  It poured with rain.

Cynthia’s Diary – March 13 – 14, 1942

Friday 13th March

Bob phoned me up and asked me if I would like to go to London.  Said I would phone tomorrow for sure.  Did not go out anywhere but did ironing and mending etc.  Mummy, Daddy and Pamela, also Wendy went to the movies.  Also Gordon and Dorothy.  He’s still staying here at Dot’s for his leave.

 

Saturday14th March         610 room

They had parade for Warship week, had photo taken by Donald.  Went to London.  Met Bob at Waterloo.  Stayed at Park Lane Hotel.  Very nice.  Elevators, bell boys etc., bathroom leading from bedroom.  Went to Young’s Chinese Restaurant.  Rained.  Went around in taxis.  Warning went about 12.  Went in lounge.  Had gin.  Had bath.  Waited on hand and foot.  Boy it was super!  It reminded me of tune “Lovely Weekend”.

 

 

Cynthia’s Diary – March 11 – 12, 1942

Wednesday 11th March

Had a letter from Ivan yesterday!  He wants me to go to London with him.  Did not go to London last weekend after all with Bob.  Went to Cranleigh Hotel.  Saw staff Sergeants.  Went to dance, only about twenty there.  One Canadian wanted to take me home.  Saw Ivy.  Not many girls there, just enough to go round.  Gordon has started his leave.

 

Thursday 12th March

Went to dance in truck.  Ivy came.  Nurses from Canada there.  Had ticket with number and name on.  Met lots officers.  Tony exrayed our hands, and I put my foot under.  Went in their mess room.  Had cider, coffee, cakes and sandwiches.  Saw Mrs. Rose.  Met captain Kerr.  Bill looks like Fred MacMurray.  Captain looks like George Brent.

Cynthia’s Diary – March 9 – 10, 1942

Monday 9th March

Did not go out today.  Mummy was not very well.  Stayed in bed!  Saw lots of the boys.  Went home to lunch.  May go to London on Friday.  Have not heard from Bob.  He is the most awful lyer!!  I don’t think I’ve spelt it right.

 

Tuesday 10th March

Saw officer in staff car I know.  Saw Mrs. Rose and officers.  Went to dance.  Charles rather nice, but danced last dance with that girl.  Tony, the sergeant, kept following me around.  Charles came and had drink with Daddy.   Mummy and Dorothy are going to private dance on Thursday.  May go tomorrow.

Cynthia’s Diary – March 7 – 8, 1942

Saturday 7th March

Went to dance.  Very good.  Danced with lots of officers met one rather nice one.  Charles danced with me.  Has been to London.  Naughty Chas danced with me also last waltz.  Little Cpl. kept following me.  Ivy nearly left me with a soldier.  The boys are very interested in Charles and my quarrel.  Did tango and rumba with Milton!

 

Sunday 8th March

Went to movies saw Paul Robeson in “Proud Valley” Dick Powell, Anita Louis in “Going Places”.  Very good.  Saw Naughty Charles.  Went to Cranley Hotel.  Saw officers.  Played cards, I lost.  Went to bed quite early about 12 o’clock.  Dot won.  I hear Charles stayed out all last night??  I wonder where!!!
