The Fitzpatrick House.
Cynthia arrived in Halifax on June 14, 1946.Â She then travelled by train to Belleville, Ontario.Â John and his brother Gordon picked Cynthia up at the train station.Â After an overnight stop at Gordon and Thelmaâ€™s, they headed to Sudbury to visit with relatives.Â A party was thrown for the newlyweds that lasted until dawn.
Originally they were going to live in Sudbury, but Gordon convinced John and his other brother Marmaduke that they should come to Peterborough.Â He said there was good farmland, (Marmaduke wanted to farm), and there were jobs at the Canadian General Electric company.
John and Cynthia lived with Gordon and Thelma on Stormont Street.Â John got a job at the GE.
On August 7, 1946, they purchased an acre of land on the Peterborough-Lakefield Highway, 5 miles from Peterborough.Â The price was $250.00. Then they decided to sell it.Â At some point they moved in with â€œDukeâ€ and Marie on the farm at Orange Corners.
They purchased the land at Fowlerâ€™s Corners from Bill Burgomaster (actually his mother owned the farm).Â John was able to get a loan from the VLA (Veterans Land Association), because he had served with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps., and they began work on the house.
At first they built half of the house.Â Cynthia thought that the wind would knock it over, so John attached guy wires to hold it down.
Awoke about 5 a.m. to children crying.Â Watched scenery.Â Went to sleep.Â Had corn flakes, bacon and egg and toast.Â Got off at Cambletown for walk.Â Also at Mont Joli.Â Bought cokes from super cafÃ©.Â Took photos.Â Had salad, ice cream for dinner etc.Â Went to sleep.
Johnnyâ€™s and my second Wedding Anniversary.Â Arrived Belleville 5 a.m.Â Johnny and Gordon waiting for me.Â 70 miles in car.Â Had flat tire.Â Another couple came with us.Â Met Thelma and children. Â Drove to town.
Johnny gave me anniversary presents of stockings, and Red Chenille house coat.Â Bought me slacks, dress, etc.Â Drove 310 miles to Sudbury.Â Had drinks etc. on way.
Pamelaâ€™s 18th Birthday. Â Met Duke, Marie, Ma and Pa Jenkins, Rae, Paul, Ellen, Phil etc.Â Had a party â€˜till 6 oâ€™clock in morning for me.Â Met dozens of people.Â Did square dances to orchestra.
Had table full of presents.Â Beer, wine.Â Wonderful food, chicken also Wedding cake.Â Went to Phil and Ellenâ€™s to supper.Â Went drive round Sudbury.
Bought me pickled egg.Â Put sugar on by mistake.Â Couldnâ€™t eat it.Â They laughed.Â Had Hen party shower for meÂ Lots more presents.Â Also wine.Â Played bingo won 4 times.Â Went to Ma Jenkinâ€™s for supper.
Drove to Lake Penage.Â Mr. and Mrs. Whitheadâ€™s Lodge.Â Mad at John for going on Lake for 2 Â½ hours with girls. Â Saw house where Dionne Quints born.Â Also lovely house they now live in.
Drove back from Sudbury.Â Could not carry my presents.Â Just clock off Jenkins.Â Had to leave bouquet behind.Â Stopped at Callendar.Â Met more Dowdalls including Johnnyâ€™s half brother.Â Had drink in their cafÃ©.Â I was sick on way.Â Had flat tire.
Johnny started work again.
Insurance man came.Â Johnny bought insurance.Â Paid $56 first payment.Â Drove down town for lime drink.Â Bought fish and chips.
Drove to canal.Â Johnny swam.Â I paddled.Â Had ice cream.Â Also hamburger.Â The weather is boiling.
Had letter from Mummy and Phyllis.Â Wrote letters.Â Sometimes itâ€™s hard to believe Iâ€™m in Canada.Â Johnny worked â€˜till 11 oâ€™clock on car.Â Top fell on his arm.
Rode down got bread with Thelma, Johnny.Â Gave me $2 to do some shopping.Â Bought pound cherries.
All went to town to do shopping.Â Bought Wendy dress.
Mummy had letter from Johnny. Had present off Auntie Elsie Also off Mrs. Batchelor. Went for papers. A shortage of cigarettes in Cranleigh. Did not go out. Mrs. Ward came.
Had new instructions from Wives Bureau. I leave Friday. And am now sailing on the Queen Mary. Daddy went back. I phoned Phyllis.
Went to Ewhurst to dancing class with Mummy and Wendy. It was raining. Glad to get home.
Did not go out. Pamela and Mummy stayed home again. Did sewing etc. Also ironing. Daddy is meeting us in London on Friday.
Did shopping.Â Had tea at Hibbs with Mummy and Wendy. Went fixed money at Bank.
Went to show. Saw Son of Lassie.
Taxi called 12:30.Â Caught 12:49 train to Guildford. Caught 1:20 train Waterloo. Packed. Stood all the way. Met Daddy. Phyllis. She gave me present. Had cup tea. Then had another at caf. Kissed them goodbye 4:30. All cried. Dozens children.
Had coffee in caf. Watched Victory Parade from Balcony. Saw King, Queen and Princesses also Prime Minister and Winston Churchill. Phoned Mummy had Whelks. Wrote to Mummy and family.
Went to tea with Phyllis.Â Met her sister, brother etc.Â Wrote to Mummy.Â Phoned Mummy.Â Left Hostel 10 oâ€™clock.Â Left Waterloo at 12. Arrived Southampton 1:30.Â Gee the Queen Maryâ€™s a big ship.Â Wonderful food.Â Had bath.
Saw film â€œDiamond Horseshoeâ€, Betty Grable, Dick Hayes.Â Phoned Mummy in morning.Â And afternoon, evening.Â Said Goodbye to them all.Â Had telegram from them.Â Had bath.
Was sea-sick, also the others.Â Forced myself to eat.Â Got cigarettes.Â Also souvenirs. Â Sat on deck and in lounge.Â Had coke, apples, etc.
Had hair shampooed and set in Beauty Salon.Â The Right Honourable Mackenzie King who is on the boat, gave a speech!
Docked at Halifax in morning about 11 oâ€™clock.Â Went through immigration. Changed money.Â Sent cables.Â Spoke several times to Mackenzie King.Â Took his photo.
